Blogging Hiatus ENDED

I haven't "Blogged" in awhile; 3.5 years since my last post, in fact.
When I first set up this "blog", it was a proxy website, a way for me to get my art out onto the internet. In 2013, I set up my own website, dangroth.com , and had been pretty good at keeping up with my blogger and tumblr accounts until late 2014, when my life got a little topsy-turvy. In the coming weeks, I will be updating my blog to include all my major works of art since 2014. After that I plan to actually "blog" a bit more...that is to write about things--a "web-log", if you will. I'm not sure if anyone actually follows this thing or gets notifications, so this "blog post" might be like throwing a bunch of flour up into the air, but that's how things go.

Artist Residency

I am spending the entire month of July 2014 in Portland, Oregon doing a self-directed artist residency.

I will be committing to at least 40 hours of art-related work each week.  Included will be full-time studio work furthering my work in pen-and-ink, watercolor, acrylic, and possibly other media; printing out higher-quality versions of zines previously only photocopied and stapled; getting t-shirts made; performing Eagle Scout: a One-Man Play, and possibly co-directing a short film; and approaching local galleries about showing my work.

I intend to create a full proposal and apply for a micro-grant at the Durango Arts Center to cover a portion of the costs.

This is a very exciting thing for me and I hope it expands my creative boundaries and opens up doors for new opportunities.

"Eagle Scout: a One-Man Play" this Thursday, Jan. 23rd

I am doing a one-man performance of "Eagle Scout: a One Man play" at Animas Trading Co. in downtown Durango.  This is a tragicomic soliloquoy, written and performed by myself, wherein I dress up in my full Boy Scout uniform and experience a vast array of emotions while listening to an old mix tape.  It will make you laugh, but you may even weep like a child.

"The Collins Cure"

The milk goes down smoothly,
A Phillip Milk of smooth lyrical content.
Managed solely for my palate,
available on cassette
     and compact disc.
I clearly love the thin sound of vocal clarity
as well as the crisp beats like a tribe.
I am going to manage my day
according to its dictates
and collapse into a mealy mush
of gravelly riverbed madness.
Gladly blathering all the way,
Visibly touching the firmament,
and swirling amid the gray.

"The Red Rocker"

A sullen Sammy Hagar,
Floating in crimson flags of eagles flying.
Big Red lightning of sockets glowing.
Murderous chords projected from
   ancient ideas.
Eagles flew previous,
But presently they glorybound fracture
The malignant orb of despondency.
Flags fly full.
